Is Fast Food The New Tobacco?

What are your eating habits? Do you happen to grab a quick bite to eat every time you get out of school? What do you usually reach for, a salad or a McDonald’s meal? Fast food has become addictive to the majority of people due to the fact that it is accessible, affordable, and quick. People do not want to put in the work and do not want to take the time out of their day to satisfy their needs by making a healthy choice. Fast food will most likely become the new tobacco with time. The government will step in eventually, but only time will tell what and how they choose to use their power. As of right now, fast food and obesity is a personal issue and has always been a personal issue.

Fast food has become a major problem throughout the years but only due to the people themselves. Let’s think back to the 1990’s when almost every kid was told to go outside to play and to be back in time for dinner. Usually that dinner includes some protein, vegetables and the necessities. Now let's think of today and how we differ from that time period. Everybody’s situation is different and that is why so many people rely on this option but it doesn’t always have to be that way. People tend to give in to their cravings and that is why obesity has become a problem. When you are looking for something to eat, the first thing you think of is a fast food place. Fast food has gotten so popular that you see it everywhere. That is what makes it so accessible. Now have you ever wondered why fast food is so affordable? It probably is because they use low quality food and ingredients along with buying in bulk. That is why they are able to sell a cheeseburger for $2.50. This attracts customers because they are able to get a meal that will satisfy their stomach for a fraction of the work and price. What they may not realize is that the price of that meal is what can also become addicting. People think fast food can just be a cheat to food when in reality, it is causing so much damage in the long run.

Many people do have the option to choose healthier alternatives in what they eat. Of course, not everyone has that luxury and they eat what they can get. Even if this is the case, you can still end up ordering grilled chicken instead of the fried version. That choice can lead to cutting the calories by half already. Instead of ordering those fries, order a fruit cup. So many alternatives can be chosen to lead a healthier lifestyle or at least trying to start one. This personal issue does not have to be so hard if people would choose to have discipline. Most of the time, the lifestyle you choose is up to the person themselves. There are expectations such as children and homeless people but I believe we can try harder as a community to better ourselves. People should learn to have the discipline to eat better, to want a better life for themselves in the present and in the future.
